PUTTING SKID CONTROL INTO PRACTICE

November. 2006
The following is a letter from Geoff - who attended a Skid control Course as part of his Driver Training Session - arranged by the company he works for (a National Company).

As the weather looks set to take a turn for the worse, and you're conscous of the dangers on the roads, come and take a skid control course - it may be one of the best ideas you ever have!

Following the skid control training on Thursday last week, I got to put it into practice on Saturday morning on the M1.

Driving conditions were very poor with heavy rain and a great deal of road spray. Visibility was low enough to have fog lights on. I noticed some police flashers on the hard shoulder and glimpsed a car against the barrier facing the wrong way.

Soon after this I started to skid - I can only assume that I hit some standing water in the outside lane. I controlled the skid for a while and avoided hitting the central reservation barrier but after several swings the car went into a spin. I now found myself traveling backwards in the inside lane with a van bearing down on me.

The car spun further and came to rest straddling lanes 2 and 3. I expected an impact but when I looked I saw that all three lanes of traffic had stopped just behind me. I pulled over to the hard shoulder and expected to feel shocked. Instead, I realised that I was still calm and I decided that being parked on the hard shoulder was not a particularly safe place to be and set off again - a bit slower.

Benefits of the training
I think that because I had practiced skid control just two days earlier, it allowed me to remain calm and control the skid for longer. This allowed me to avoid hitting the barrier of the central reservation and allowed other vehicles more time to slow down to avoid collision.

Outcome
No injuries. No car damage. No accident.

I don't think that I did everything right that I'd been taught in the training, but I must have done better than I would have without the training. It could have been a whole lot worse for myself and for the cars following me. A very lucky escape.
Thanks again for the training.

Geoff

...............I believe that the training played a significant role in preventing this incident become a serious accident.
